SSC, the company which became famous for its Ultimate Aero, the fastest street legal production car in the world for a time, has just been green-lit for its new factory to build the Tuatara supercar.
SSC is now moving into their new factory in West Richland, WA. The factory has been in the works for the last few years, but a variety of financial hurdles have forestalled its opening. Construction will start this year, however, and will be completed by early 2015. The new factory will have about 40,000 square feet of floor space, and represents SSC’s attempt to boost its production capability, hoping to transform itself into a premier supercar manufacturer.
The mainstay of the production at the new factory will be the new Tuatara(pictured above.) The Tuatara produces around 1,350 horsepower and 1,280 ft. lbs. of torque. Both of those figures far outshine the Bugatti Veyron ,and SSC hopes their new production car can wrestle back the title of world’s fastest street legal production car. Wed don’t have any acceleration figures, but apparently, a prototype of the Tuatara reached 200 mph in sixteen seconds.
While the design of the Tuatara looks impressive, it’s certainly got its work cut out. When it comes to the world of ultra-high performing hypercars, there is certainly competition aplenty. Not only does the Bugatti Veyron always seem to get another model variant boasting even greater speed and acceleration, we’ve also recently seen manufacturers competing more ambitiously for the title of “world’s fastest,” notably Hennessey and Koenigsegg. Time will tell if SSC can regain its crown.
