When Renault decided to sponsor its own one make series, rather than merely improvising one of their existing road cars into a race-worthy platform, they decided to design an all-new racing platform. What they ended up with was the R.S. 01, a totally unique and purpose built race-car.
The R.S. 01 will be the staple of the Renaultsport Trophy series, which is a part of the World Series by Renault. The R.S. 01 employs the same engine as the Nissan GT-R, in the form of a 3.8 liter twin-turbo V6. The mid-mounted engine sits in a high-tech carbon fiber monocoque chassis.
The R.S. 01 will kick off for the first time in 2015 and will see 20 teams compete. Renaultsport Trophy is envisioned as a feeder series for such higher level competitions as FIA WEC, DTM, and Super GT.
The above video traces the development of the R.S. 01 from sketch to production.
